Canberra and Melbourne based outfit The Royal Belgian Conspiracy has just released their new single Hold On. The brainchild of lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Moozy, who trained as a jazz musician, The Royal Belgian Conspiracy’s style is predominantly folk-pop with alt-country elements.
Hold On is an accessible and quietly stirring song with memorable hooks, an organic sound, highlighted by an evocative vocal performance from Moozy. The lyric is personal yet universal, one whose narrative is a reminder for all to push through dark times when things seem to get too much, that change is inevitable and in time, things will pass. With a style that’s reminiscent of Bon Iver, The Avett Brothers, The National, and Damien Rice, Hold On is moving, intimate and unassuming in its melodic strength, replete with memorable hooks. Hold On’s subtle acoustic guitar intro segues into a combination of tasteful instrumentation, suitably engaging production, and expressive performances all round. The arrangement makes the most of each musical motif and contains the right balance of surprise and expectance.
As Moozy says about his creative process: ‘A lot of the songs I write are close to the heart. They’re based on my life experiences or those of people around me. I don’t really consciously plan to write that way, but it seems to come naturally.’ This natural ability is used to the fullest here, an endearing amalgamation of musical know-how and assiduously wrought observation. Hold On is from The Royal Belgian Conspiracy’s forthcoming and highly anticipated album due out soon.
As Moozy recalls regarding his early years: ‘I cut my teeth performing by busking in the London Underground at Tottenham Court Road tube station. Busking was a great way to get comfortable singing to people.’ This sense of comfort is just what the audience will feel also. Hold On’s undeniable authenticity and persuasive confidence will undoubtedly attract massive across-the-board attention at radio and all streaming platforms.
