Ras Banamungu, the West Australian based vocalist, songwriter, percussionist and long- experienced musical therapist, has just released a new single My Sunshine, a reggae-infused blend of roots, blues and Afrobeat that is sure to get a lot of attention from radio and get added to a whole bunch of streaming playlists.
The new song is a joyous love song with global appeal, underpinned by a stunning array of performances and Idi’s trademark vocal style. The song has already won an Akademia Award for Idi, who is also known as Ras Banamungu and The Det-n-ators International, an exciting live act that incorporates dancers and backing vocalists.
Having also won the prestigious Akademia award and Poze productions award for best album and EP with I am Messenjah and Let’s Make our Business Forgiveness, the celebrated Rastafarian was also awarded for his heart-stopping live performance at the Coast to Coast awards in Melbourne 2019. My Sunshine is the perfect mood-changer, with its classic reggae-soaked grooves crossing the genre line into Afrobeat and contemporary dance.
The lyrics too are heart-felt and joyously romantic; an ode to desire, love and affection, with Idi’s idiosyncratic writing skills at the fore, creating a wonderfully poignant and personal accompaniment to the alluring and exceptional music, containing such ingeniously whimsical lines as, ‘Yah done know, this is just for you, mi luvalashable and sunshine Queen, feel it, hello mi sunshine’.
The song also harnesses the power of dynamics to bring to the surface the myriad of soulful and passionate emotional yearnings, most particularly with the tremendous spirit of the backing vocals and the punctuating cadences of the intersecting brass lines, adding to the track’s warm and full production.
My Sunshine is a timely release from Idi Banamungu, reflecting the power and strength of maintaining and expressing inner harmony amid a time of apprehension and uncertainty.
